Hot rods, cool classics and classic iron shine at our automobile and motorcycle show. Spectators’ votes determine trophy winners at this family-oriented afternoon of cars, bikes, live music, hillbuggy rod rides for kids, art, crafts, food, raffles and prize giveaways all day long.

Admission is free, all proceeds go to local charity. Held in conjunction with Coasters Car Club weekend events —this is a alternative to the SCDRA drag races— and proudly hosted by Garden Bay Hotel and Marina.

Program

The event is in beautiful, downtown Garden Bay, on the grounds of Garden Bay Hotel and a private estate next door. Admission is free and all proceeds go to local charity.

By noon, all entrants have their gorgeous vehicles displayed for judging, which is done by you, the spectator. Here’s what the day holds in store for you:

  • Pick up your ballot when you enter the grounds. You’ll be voting for entries in six categories by age (age of vehicle, not owner) plus Best of Show.
  • Fill out and submit your Prize Draw entry (you’ll get this with your ballot— our thank-you for your help in making this event a success). We’ll hold random draws all day for prizes donated by local businesses.
  • Enjoy live music, on the grounds and inside the pub, by Canadian recording artist Joe Stanton. Offsite link: JoeStanton.com.
  • Talk to the car and truck owners. They’re proud of their vehicles and will be happy to tell you about them. This kind of information is also helpful in deciding who to vote for.
  • Browse local art and crafts at our vendors’ booths. Again this year, we’re expecting some great representation from talented artists and artisans from Pender Harbour, Egmont and beyond.
  • Take the little kids for a Texada Island Hillbuggy rod ride with Skinny Jimmy Dougan. These remarkable hillbuggies are entirely hand-built, carved from solid wood and lovingly finished with exceptional attention to detail. Skinny Jimmy is a locally well-known country-and-western music artist, and a bit of an eccentric, but today he’ll focus on entertaining the kids. Thanks, Jim!
  • You’ll probably get hungry through the day, so take a lunch break at the Rotary Club of Pender Harbour barbecue. Find a shady spot on the lawn and enjoy.
  • Pick up a souvenir Pender Harbour Show & Shine t-shirt, designed by the Pender Harbour Paper Mill.
  • By 4 pm, all the ballots are counted and the winners are announced.
  • By 5 pm, the show vehicles must leave the grounds, but you don’t have to. Drop in at Garden Bay Pub or Garden Bay Restaurant —both have outdoor, waterfront decks— for a bite to eat and a cool drink... it’s going to be a warm, sunny day... we promise! Please note that you must be 19 or over to enter the pub. There’s music all day, and you may choose to stick around for dancing in the evening.

The rest of the weekend? Don’t miss Coasters Car Club’s annual Sleepy Hollow Rod Run, Car Show & Drag Races.

Entrants’ Information

Display your baby along with the competition on a spacious private estate next to Garden Bay Hotel in Pender Harbour (yes, Garden Bay). You won’t be crowded and you’ll be on a manicured lawn, so you can settle in with sun umbrellas and lawn chairs for a friendly and laid-back afternoon of cars, music, awed spectators and fellow car buffs.

Your $25 registration fee includes a gift bag, complimentary lunch at Garden Bay Pub, prize draw entry and entry of your vehicle in the main competition. You’ll compete for trophies and prizes in the following categories, judged by spectator’s choice.

        • Best of Show - Automobile
        • Best of Show - Motorcycle
        • Best 1932 & Older
        • Best 1933 - 1939
        • Best 1940 - 1949
        • Best 1959 - 1959
        • Best 1960 - 1969
        • Best 1970 - 1979
        • Best 1980 & Newer

A vehicle may win both its age category and Best of Show. Trophy and prize winners are announced at 4 pm. Vehicles must be removed from the display area by 5 pm. All proceeds are donated to local charity (we haven’t chosen a recipient yet for 2010, but we’ll let you know as soon as we do).

Register

Choose one of three ways to register:

  1. Download your Registration Form for printing, complete it and return to Garden Bay Hotel by fax or snail mail (you’ll need Acrobat Reader to view and print this .pdf file).
  2. If you’d like us to fax or mail the form to you, e-mail or call Garden Bay Pub, 604-883-2674. Or...
  3. Register in person, at the Show & Shine.

Alley of the Arts

Stroll through the “Alley of the Arts” to view works and wares (many with a hot rod or classic car theme) from local artists and artisans.

If you’d like to set up a display, e-mail or call Billy at 604-865-0640. An Alley of the Arts spot is $10 for the day.

When setting up, we ask that you leave ample room between your display and any nearby show vehicles. Please note that we do not supply booths and tables, and you must park your vehicle offsite (although you can drive in to unload your display).
