People sometimes assume that Pender Harbour is a town or village with its own mayor and council. In fact, it is an unincorporated Regional District area, so local government services are provided by the Sunshine Coast Regional District, based in Wilson Creek just south of Sechelt.

In the summer of 1792, Capt. George Vancouver explored the inlets and waterways of the Sunshine Coast.

A century later, true pioneers, men wanting to live off the land, came to “the harbour” because of abundant of fish and game, and a climate that guaranteed a high yield from family gardens and orchards.

It was also an ideal spot for a man to forget an unsavory past... or have it forgotten by those who might seek retribution.

Area A Quality Water Association

Joe Harrison, 604-883-9958

Formerly the Hotel Lake Water Conservation Association, AAQWA formed in 2003 to ensure provision of safe and ample drinking water for residents. Membership is free. The AGM is held in August.

Bear Bay Stewardship Alliance

The Bear Bay Stewardship Alliance (BBSA) formed in 2007 to prevent logging north of Bear Bay Road, citing concerns about the loss of recreational assets, an existing trail and potential future trails, harm to the tourism industry and Sakinaw Lake sockeye, degrading of shallow water wells and danger from logging trucks on Bear Bay Road. Their spokesman is Ryan Logtenberg.

Egmont Logging Advisory Committee

Partially in response to the Friends of Egmont’s Save Our Watershed campaign, Regional Director John Rees facilitated formation an advisory committee to work with Tsain-Ko Development Corporation in the hope of controlling upcoming logging in the area. The group hopes to change logging practices and pressure the provincial government to further restrict activity in watersheds. The committee, formed in Aug. 2007, is made up of Egmont and Ruby Lake residents George Connell, Ron Fearn, Kim Foster, Doug Imbeau, Norma Martin, Catherine McEachern, Martin Mees and Marueen (Griffith) Parrott.
