Pender Harbour is a small, rural and unique community. Although our profile is rapidly changing, there are still many 5th- and 6th-generation Pender Harbour residents whose forefathers came from the British Isles via the Maritimes to work in canneries and to fish in the Depression years.
While the local economy suffers from a decline in resource-based industry and skyrocketing housing prices, the past several years has seen considerable real estate purchases by out-of-province and even offshore investors. Along with this comes a flurry of construction as more and more well-heeled boomers realize that the Sunshine Coast is not just a nice place, but near Vancouver and more affordable.
Most of us are happy without sidewalks, traffic lights, parking meters and a dog-catcher, but we know that the times, they are a-changin’.
Thinking of moving here? We’ll tell you what your real estate agent and the tourism associations might neglect to mention.
