Brickhouse? Wow, I used to listen to them back in the day, my day, which was one long time ago. Glad to hear they're still around.

Congrats, Keither-- good to have you back and great to have you at Lions Park!

Thanks Myr!

We are so excited about this year! Being the 3rd year of the festival we knew it was time to step things up, so the headliners we've booked for each night from the States & Japan are acts that generally would never make their way to the Coast... let alone Vancouver.

We're going all out this year, flying bands in from out-of-country and assembling an artist lineup that's comparable to any of North America's "premier" music festivals!

I'll be up on the Coast every weekend for the next few months, trying to acquire sponsors & festival program advertisers... so if anyone is aware of any businesses that would like some great exposure, please have them contact me at keith@bonfirefestival.com.

THANKS!

Congratulations Bonfire!!!
So glad you could find a venue in the Harbour. I think what you are doing is just what is needed to promote the area and with your international selection of bands you will be spreading the news around the globe.
A couple of questions for you. What is the "s/c" mean in the ticket price? Also just who dreamt up the "eco-facility fee" and who's pocket will this be going into?
I doubt I will be able to attend but here's wishing you the best of luck. May you fill the field with people, love and a hell of a good time.

s/c -- Sunshine Charge. If the weather isn't nice, this fee will be refunded.
Eco-facility fee -- now that's a good question.

Sunshine charge... good one, but not quite accurate.

s/c is service charges, which are charged by the ticket outlets (or PayPal if you're buying online) for their handling of our tickets and any fees that they incur (when people use VISA, etc...).

The Eco-Facility Fee is a $2.00 fee from each & every ticket sold that we are being charged for the use of the Lions Park facility this year. All those monies will be going directly to the Pender Harbour Lions Club for their part in this year's event.

Hey all.

We regretfully update that Japan's MELTONE will no longer be able to join us for the 2007 Bonfire Music Festival due to touring & travel fatigue. They're heading back to Tokyo for some well earned R&R after a few long months touring the United States. We hope they have a speedy recovery and will look forward to their joining us sometime in the years ahead.

With that being said, we are working diligently to replace them with some great music from another 'as-yet-unrepresented-at-Bonfire' neighbourhood of the global music community... Eastern Canada!!

We should have an announcement very soon.
Thanks!

Official Release...

BONFIRE MUSIC FESTIVAL 2007 ADDS 2ND STAGE, MORE WORKSHOPS & CHILDREN"S PERFORMANCES!!

You heard it here first folks! (Really... we're not announcing it anywhere else for a few days!). With the amazing media attention, community support & ticket sales we've received in only 1 short month, the Bonfire Board of Directors made a decision last night to add a second stage, more interactive workshops and extra children's performances & activities to this year's Bonfire Music Festival.

The 'TROUBADOUR STAGE' will feature acoustic solo, duo & trio performances during the Main Stage set breaks... so there will be live music non-stop all day! We're going to use the existing Lions Park stage for these sets, which will be very intimate & up-close performances with some very fine musicians who didn't quite fit in with our Main Stage theme this year, but were very worthy of a spot on the 2007 bill nonetheless!

Some of the artists we're lining up for this stage include... but are certainly not limited to!

Ty West - www.tywest.ca
Kit & Tim - www.myspace.com/kitandtim
Papa Josh - www.myspace.com/papajoshmusic
Muffin Top - www.myspace.com/juniperwatters
Daniel & Richard Martin - www.myspace.com/

We are also working on much more interactive workshops this year, so you folks will have a chance to get closer to the musicians, meet & greet them and enjoy some of the musical knowledge they have to share with all of us... most notably aspiring musicians & artists. Workshops will be held in the Lions Park Hall during the day so the crowds will be limited and those who get in will be able to get close and really soak it up. More of the musicians are offering new & creative ideas to add to the overall feel of the event every day, so we're gonna have to try and figure out which one's will work best. There's no way we'll be able to accommodate all the artist workshop requests, which is such an amazing feeling... these guys really want to give back!

Some of the workshops we're planning this year include...

"Making It Funky: How to put together the bomb live grooves"
"Everybody Can Improvise, but where do you start?"

Those are the only 2 that have been decided on thus far, but there'll be many more GREAT experiences for people to get into... I promise!

Finally, the Bonfire Team have been making arrangements with the folks at www.mothering.com to put together a whole lot of fun children's activities this year, including a theatrical & dance production that the kids will be practicing through the first few days and performing on the Main Stage Sunday afternoon! There will also be more hula-hooping workshops, stilt walking, guitar for kids and more!

We're really working our tails off this year to make this the best Bonfire yet. When we lost Ruby Lake, we thought our run on the Coast was over and we would have to move to Pemberton or Chilliwack or somewhere less desirable. However, YOU PEOPLE called us and showed your love, your support & your desire to keep us right where this festival was born, belongs and would like to stay... PENDER HARBOUR! With the development of Lions Park it is our hopes that this little celebration of ours will have a long, rewarding & fruitful life... not only for us, but for everyone associated with the event & the local community.

Thank you all for getting behind us this year!

8 more weeks folks, and boy do we have something special in store for ya'll!!

Best regards
Keither

Keither... Keither... Keither...
You didn't lose Ruby Lake. They lost you.
<g>

Sounds like Bonfire plans are coming along just fine.
Btw, the kids' activities are responsible for one dad and his two kids to change holiday plans to be here for them. Back in the day, his mom was a Vancouver Folk Music Festival organizer, so he'll be right at home too.

You didn't lose Ruby Lake. They lost you.

Thanks Myr... that's the kind of community support I was referring to. :)

Plans are coming along wonderfully. Hard tickets should be available at the Sunshine Coast outlets next week, when I come over Monday to meet with a bunch of the local businesses and try to sell some ad space in our festival program. We're also still looking for sponsors if anyone may be interested in getting some excellent exposure for their business.

Bonfire is drawing people from all over the Western US & Canada due to this year's lineup, so there will be lots of Sunshine Coast newcomers from far away places.. as well as the usual contingent of folks from Vancouver, Whistler, the Islands & of course the Coast itself.

That's great to hear that we'll have another family at this year's event. Thta just means even more smiling children's faces! Gotta love the kids at Bonfire... the hula hooping, the glow sticks, and all that fun stuff.

We're really excited. I'm so antsy for these 8 weeks to pass quickly it's driving me crazy!

See ya'll soon! :)

Hey all.

I was just wondering who we might talk to about the possibility of using the PH High School parking lot for Bonfire day parkers in August.

It's School District 46, yes? Is it a local district office in PH, or is it down in Sechelt and handled through the SCRD school board?

Just wondering, as there can never be too many parking options! :)

We're working on arranging some shuttle services as well, but as much infrastructure as we can set up in advance to alleviate any issues that may arise would be very helpful.

Thanx!
Keither

Hello again! I'm back!!

Well... we're heading over to Lions Park to start building this year's MAGICAL site on Monday, and I wanted to address something... really the only concern that's come up in some e-mails I received from PH locals.

This year's price increase.

There are a few reasons for the 20% rise on ticket prices this year (only the weekend passes mind you), so I'm gonna take this in point form.

** day tickets only went up $5.00 per day **

The new venue - Lions Park is amazingly beautiful, but it's also 'naked' as festival sites go. Unlike Ruby Lake, this year we're having to bring in power, a BIG stage (actually, it's the old Vancouver Folk Festival stage!), more site materials (fencing, tents, lighting, decorations, etc...), more trucks to haul all the stuff, etc. Basically, this year's production (& production team) have increased exponentially in both size and price.

Water - there was only 1 water station at Lions Park, so we're also having to bring infrastructure in to handle the water needs of so many people... so we're setting up a lot of pumps and hoses, hopefully some home made showers and whatever else we figure we'll need or happens to come up over the weekend.

Talent - OH YEAH!!! Simply put, we felt this was the year to really take things up a notch musically... so we doubled our entertainment budget! We're flying Saturday night's headliners RAQ all the way out from Burlington, Vermont to perform for Bonfire this year, and they are one of the fastest rising bands on the US East Coast! Add San Fran's Garaj Mahal, Seattle's Flowmotion and the rest of this year's amazing Canadian talent (not to mention we've added a 2nd stage of music!) and again it was simply a matter of costs rising in another area of production.

KidZone - We have a very large, well planned children's program this year... simply due to all the great numbers of little kids we've had the last 2 years.

Red Tape - No need to get into it, but with so much more going into production, there obviously needs to be more 'behind the scenes' things taken care of like insurance, etc...

The numbers/attendance - For 2 years we've floated Bonfire on our life's savings, and I'm finally tapped! ;) This was to be expected in building a big event like this. It's not exactly a short-term project and I understand that, but we can't afford to lose any more $$$, and we also put in so much time & effort that we don't receive a wage for. We did some projections, created a budget on the new cost breakdown... and these ticket prices were the numbers we hoped would translate into Bonfire 2007 at least breaking even so we can grow for next year, get some more sponsors behind us and keep this train rolling.

Bottom line... we don't want anyone to think we're trying to grind the community, overcharge, line our pockets or anything like that. This year's prices are just a realistic reflection of the size & detail that has been put into this year's event.

We know this is going to be the best Bonfire yet, and we hope that many of you decide to join us for what is sure to be a fantastic weekend of music, art, camping & FUN!!!

Thank you all for your support!

Keither :)

Thanks Len & Jason.

Len... I look forward to seeing your pics. You were at it all weekend long and I'm sure you got some amazing takes. I'm excited!

This year's production was the best yet. We encountered all sorts of issues through the weekend (a sagging stage roof, CRAZY weather, new site intricacies, etc...) but things went off more or less without a hitch. We were able to conquer all that faced us and press forward with what turned out to be a fabulous weekend... especially the music & all the beautiful people!

Our only surprise was the low turnout of locals? Our local turnout at Ruby Lake last year was our bread & butter and the reason we succeeded despite all last year's problems. This year, we were expecting an even larger contingent of PH & Sunshine Coast attendees, but they never materialized. Did we miss something? Was there something else going on that people went to instead? Is Lions Park a less desirable location than our old one up the road? Were our prices too high? Did we not advertise enough, so not enough peoiple knew about it? Where were all our local folks who came out last year?

These are things we need to know so we can learn from them and make the necessary adjustments for next year... if we decide to move forward again. We took a big step backwards this year with regards to the support of our little festival and we can't figure out why? We plan to take one more kick at the can on the Sunshine Coast as I still believe it is a feasible location for this small festival. We'll certainly be scaling things down to play it a little safer next year, using more local talent and bringing our ticket prices down.

I'm just curious to get a Pender Harbourites take on things.

Is Bonfire wanted up there? It felt like we were?

Thx
K

ps. Thanks for the nice words about my Mom Len! She & my sisters (our box office staff!) have become Bonfire regulars, part of the family and they love getting away to the Coast for this annual celebration of good music, good people and good times! Mama D is now a converted concert goer... at only 75 years young!
