Getting Here By Land
Pender Harbour is 64 km (about an hour's drive) from the Langdale ferry terminal and about a half-hour south of the Earl's Cove terminal. Langdale is near Gibson’s Landing, where “The Beachcombers” was filmed. Earl’s Cove leads by ferry to Saltery Bay, which is connected by road to Powell River, Lund, and ferries to Texada Island and Vancouver Island.
History
The Sunshine Coast Highway reached Pender Harbour in 1936, with relief gangs doing much of the labour, but it took until well into the 1950's for paving. With that, Pender Harbourites were connected by land to the rest of the Sunshine Coast, but it’s not hard to find old-timers who miss the isolation.

Driving
Road/traffic conditions report - 1-800-550-4997
The Sunshine Coast Highway (Highway 101) is a fairly level but winding route. If you don't know the road, don't speed; sharp corners may surprise you. If you're not comfortable driving at the speed of other traffic, please take advantage of a pullout to let it safely pass. Passing lanes are infrequent.
Always watch for wildlife. Deer and bear may pop out onto the road anywhere, and Roosevelt elk are regulars in Kleindale.
The law in British columbia
- Cell Phones - It is illegal to use a cell phone or pda communication device while operating a vehicle. Hands-free devices are allowed.
- Alcohol - Drinking alcohol while driving in British Columbia carries some of the harshest penalties in North America, modeled after recommendations of the Texas-based lobby group, Mothers Against Drunk Drivers. Although the legal limit for criminal conviction is .05%, the attitude is “zero tolerance” and any amount or even suspicion can result in a 24-hour roadside suspension. You are equally liable if you are sitting in your vehicle, parked, with the ignition off.
- Smoking - Smoking in your vehicle is prohibited if there is a child in the vehicle.
Bicycling
If you absolutely must cycle the Sunshine Coast Highway, do so with caution! Pullouts are few, visibility is often restricted by turns and some sections of the Sunshine Coast Highway (Hwy. 101) lack shoulders.
You will find occasional, manicured routes constructed off-highway, but there are no routes to Pender Harbour other than the highway.
Also see Riding (Bicycles).
On Foot
It’s a long walk to Pender Harbour from anywhere, but hitchhiking is legal on the Sunshine Coast.
There is a community bus that runs from Sechelt to Pender Harbour and Egmont twice a week, and a commercial coach line that makes daily Vancouver-Powell River Runs. Learn more at Infrastructure> Transportation.
