In Pender Harbour we love to catch fish, cook fish, eat fish and talk fish. The area has been known as a fishing hot spot since the beginning of the 1900's when salmon were pulled from our waters in record sizes and numbers, all year long. In those days, many residents depended on fish and shellfish for both food and income.
Sports fishing regulations are tighter everywhere these days, but there are still monster salmon lurking in the deeps of Pender Harbour, waiting to give you bragging rights to compete with the pros. For a change of pace, a tasty meal and great fun for the kids, try bottom-fishing for cod, flounder and snapper, or an afternoon freshwater fishing with a fly rod on the shore of a local lake.
Shellfish Harvesting
Prawns, crabs, oysters, clams and other shellfish can be harvested recreationally year-round.
Closures
Paralytic shellfish poisoning is often fatal. Always check for Red Tide and other possible closures, and note that cooking does not destroy the paralytic shellfish or Red Tide toxin, which occurs only in bivalves.
Contamination notices are usually posted at access points where a closure is in effect, but it’s best to confirm your safety before eating your haul.
Listen to a 24/7 recorded message at 1-866-431-3474 or call the Pender Harbour Fisheries Office, 604-883-2313 (8 a.m. to noon), for current closure and other information.
