Emergency treatment, minor procedures, limited tests, counseling and other services are provided by nurse practitioner Kimberley MacDougall, nurses and visiting health care workers. Office space is leased to doctors, a dentist, chiropractor, physiotherapist and other healthcare professionals who are available by appointment.
Nursing services include blood pressure monitoring, wound dressing, injections, ear canal syringing, diet counseling, breast self-exam instruction, diabetic counseling and glucometer checks. Drawing of blood, electrocardiograms and specimen dispatch are available.
Health Centre employees may refer patients to the BC Ambulance Service and other health-care agencies. Doctors renting office space at the Health Centre may refer patients to specialists on and off the Sunshine Coast, and may refer a patient for in-home nursing care.
The Pender Harbour Health Centre is administered by Rick MacDonald under the direction of the Pender Harbour Health Centre Society. The health centre is funded by taxation delivered through the Sunshine Coast Regional District and Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, and proceeds from office rental, Bargain Barn thrift store sales, donations, membership dues and other fundraisers.
Our health centre was built when St. Mary's Hospital (see below) was closed in Pender Harbour and moved to Sechelt in 1964. Offsite link: Pender Harbour Health Centre.

HISTORY
Pender Harbour (Garden Bay) has historical significance as the location of the Sunshine Coast’s first hospital, St. Mary’s. Built by the Columbia Coast Mission, with lots of help and donations from locals, it opened on August 16, 1930. It was moved to Sechelt in 1964, replaced with Pender Harbour Health Centre. St. Mary’s Hospital is currently undergoing a $44 million expansion which will more than double its size. The project, funded by the BC Ministry of Health and hospital district, is expected to be completed in 2012 or 2013.
Off-Coast Appointments
Those traveling to the Lower Mainland for a referred medical appointment may obtain a pass for free travel on the Langdale-Horseshoe Bay ferry for themselves, their vehicle and a pre-approved driver or passenger.
You must obtain and complete your pass in advance from your doctor’s office, the clinic or hospital. Make sure you get the referring physician’s registration number, necessary to complete the form.
