Hiking

Do you fancy a leisurely stroll down a manicured path or a rigorous climb through wilderness terrain? Either, plus everything in between, is available to those who like to get up close and personal with Mother Nature in Pender Harbour.

Hiking 101

  • Let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to be back.
  • Don’t start a forest fire. Our lush woodland vegetation is deceptively dry and flammable in late spring, summer and fall.
  • Bring first-aid and other emergency equipment.
  • Don’t rely on your cel phone— it may not work.
  • Bring water, protein snacks, your medication, and a bag for your garbage. Keep sealed anything that might smell tasty to a bear.
  • Bring a compass and, more importantly, know how to use it. Stay on the trail. A forestry map from the Government Agent's Office is invaluable for exploring our area.
  • Wear comfortable shoes, dress in layers and pack a rain poncho.
  • Be prepared for wildlife encounters. Carry bear-spray and a whistle. Feel free to sing as you hike (even if you have a good voice, it will likely frighten away all large wildlife). If you’re shy, attach a bell to your clothing.
  • Ask locals for hiking suggestions and tips about a specific destination.
  • Leave the iPod behind; the sounds of the wilderness are part of the experience.
