Lobby Groups

We don’t necessarily agree with a lobby group’s cause, but we champion their right to organize and petition the government to preserve what’s important to them, or to change what will improve their lives.

If you see one that shares your view, members will be happy to have you join their activities.

Area A Quality Water Association (AAQWA)

Formerly the Hotel Lake Water Conservation Association, AAQWA formed in 2003 to ensure provision of ample, safe drinking water for residents. The AGM is held in August. Contact Joe Harrison, 604-883-9958.

Bear Bay Stewardship Alliance

The Bear Bay Stewardship Alliance (BBSA) formed in 2007 to prevent logging north of Bear Bay Road, citing concerns about recreational asset losses, loss of an existing trail and potential future trails, harm to the tourism industry and Sakinaw Lake sockeye, degrading of shallow water wells and danger from logging trucks on Bear Bay Road. The group offers tours of the area every Saturday at 1 pm, leaving from the trail entrance.

For more information, contact Ryan Logtenberg. Offsite link: Bear Bay Stewardship Alliance.

Clean Air Society, Sunshine Coast

This group opposes backyard burning and the cosmetic use of pesticides, and they promote the use of efficient wood stoves. Their newsletter is available at the Pender Harbour Reading Centre.

For more information, contact Ryan Logtenburg. Offsite link: Sunshine Coast Clean Air Society.

Conservation Association, Sunshine Coast

This group is against local logging and mining, independent power projects (IPPs) and a liquid natural gas (LNG) facility on Texada Island.

Friends of Egmont

The Friends of Egmont are opposed to logging near Egmont.

Friends of the Caren

This group asks you to join them in their “battle to save Canada’s famous Caren Range from a proposed massive open pit mine,” but we must point out there is no proposal for such a project, although rumour has it that a small gravel pit may be developed.

Ruby Lake Landholders’ Association

(Ruby) lakeshore property owners organized in 1979 to preserve the environmental integrity of the lake and surrounding areas, primarily by opposing logging. It also concerns itself with fire protection, policing and water supply for properties on and near the lake. Area Planning Commission member Catherine McEachern is their spokesperson.

Sakinaw Lake Community Association

This focus of this influential, not-for-profit group’s activities is to enhance the environment and improve the life of its 400+ members, Sakinaw Lake and area property owners, most of whose primary residence is in the Lower Mainland. Offsite Link: Sakinaw Lake Community Association.
