Regional Government

In 1964, the Provincial government created Regional Districts throughout British Columbia, with the exception of the Stikine region. Pender Harbour and Egmont is part of Area A of the Sunshine Coast Regional District.

In 2008, an Area A Incorporation Study is scrapped in favour of a Regional Growth Strategy (BC Municipal Affairs will not allow them simultaneously).

Sunshine Coast Regional District

1975 Field Road, Sechelt (Wilson Creek) - 604-885-6800

The Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) was incorporated on January 4, 1967. Pender Harbour-Egmont or Area A is the largest of five electoral areas of the SCRD.

The SCRD board comprises an elected representative from each electoral area, the municipalities of Gibsons and Sechelt, and the Sechelt Indian Band. Roberts Creek Director, Donna Shugar, is the board chair.

The SCRD collects taxes to manage parks, landfill sites, building permits, regional parks, some community services and other functions, i.e. transportation, recreation and library service.

Zoning, land-use and other bylaws are tied to our Official Community Plan and enforced by the SCRD.

In 2008, the SCRD opened a satellite office on Lagoon Road in Madeira Park, but scrapped the idea within a couple of years.

Regional Director

Eric Graham, Irvine’s Landing - 604-883-9061

Eric Graham is our Regional Director, representing Pender Harbour-Egmont or Area A at the SCRD board. He was elected for a three-year term beginning Dec. 3, 2008. His Alternate is Barrie Wilbee.

Graham formerly owned the Park Motel and has been a Pender Harbour resident since 1992. He is retired and lives at Daniel Point with his dog, Daisy. Born and raised in Calgary, he is a Business Administration graduate from Mount Royal College and served two terms as City Councilor in Fort St. John.

Area A Planning Commission (APC)

APC members are appointed by the Regional Director to provide local knowledge, community feedback, opinions and recommendations on subdivision and other land-use applications to be considered at SCRD board and committee meetings.

Current APC members are Geoff Craig (Chair), Paul Cuppin, Jim Hall, Rick Harmer, Ryan Longtenburg, Catherine McEachern, Jane McOuat, Rob Metcalfe, John Paine and Ted Taylor. Irene Boyd is Secretary.

Area A APC meetings are public, held most months at Pender Harbour Secondary School. Anyone wishing to speak must request, in advance, that their discussion item be put on the agenda.

Egmont Logging Advisory Committee

Partially in response to the Friends of Egmont’s “Save Our Watershed” campaign, former Regional Director John Rees facilitated formation of this group in 2007 to work with Tsain-Ko Development Corporation in the hope of controlling upcoming logging in the area. The group hopes to change logging practices and pressure the provincial government to further restrict activity in local watersheds.
