Saltwater (Ocean) Swimming
Most waterfront parks offer saltwater access, but locals generally favour the sheltered bay, easy access and sandy shoreline at Baker's Beach.
Freshwater (Lake) Swimming
Garden Bay Lake
A table of large, smooth boulders at the “horseshoe” provides a picturesque lounging area near an anchored raft (thanks to Mike Sergeant). Further along, a sandy beach and small dock is a favourite summertime gathering spot.
Because this is Garden Bay’s drinking water source, porta-potties have been installed along the road and are maintained by the SCRD. The Rotary Club placed a couple of benches and interpretive signs along the shoreline for walkers.
Katherine Lake
This small, man-made lake and sandy beach at Katherine Lake Park is popular with visitors and local families alike, although sometimes its popularity results in a closure due to high bacteria levels, primarily fecal coliform. Check for current status.
Ruby Lake
At this is a popular, busy spot where you'll share the water with turtles, ducks and other inhabitants, not to mention the occasional canoe and motorboat further out. Arguably the warmest lake in the area. Access from Dan Bosch Park or Ramp Road off Hwy. 101.
